TO SHOWER OR NOT TO SHOWER

To create these symbols I decided to use very simple showers. On the shower symbol, I used blue colored lines to create a water effect. On the don't shower symbol, I removed the water and placed a red 'x' to emphasize the point not to shower.

TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT

To represent eating, I used a knife and a fork created out of basic shapes. To emphasize not eating, I placed a red 'x' over the image.

TO SLEEP OR NOT TO SLEEP

To depict sleeping I used a picture of a person lying in a bed. Then I placed three Z's above the image to emphasize the idea of sleeping. To show not sleeping, I removed the Z's and place a bright red 'x' over the original image.

TO BRUSH OR NOT TO BRUSH

To show brushing teeth I created a toothbrush and toothpaste out of simple shapes and lines. To show not brushing teeth I placed a red 'x' over the original image.

TO EXERCISE OR NOT TO EXERCISE

To display exercising, I used an image of two people in different exercise positions created with basic lines and shapes. To emphasize not exercising, I placed a red 'x' over the original image.

Journal # 10

This Nike ad suggests that a small boy is peeing on a wall, while a small dog watches. It is a metaphor, because the slogan of Nike is, ‘JUST DO IT’. Most people would think twice about peeing in a public place, especially doing so right on a wall. However, the Nike slogan tells the boy to simply, ‘JUST DO IT’. I think this is an effective ad because the outlandish picture of the boy peeing on a wall would get the viewer’s attention. After the attention is gained, they notice the slogan just do it, and the comical experience with the ad will stick with them.

10 Great Inventions

Cell phone: Great invention because you can call anyone anywhere. You can even take a picture if you didn’t bring your camera. If you don’t need to have a conversation with someone, you can send the important message in a text.

Laptop: A laptop is a great invention because you can do everything on it. I use my laptop everyday for email, school, Internet, pictures, music, etc.

CD Player: A CD player is a great invention because you can play music.

Microwave: This invention is great because you can have hot food in seconds, without having to heat up the oven or turn on the stove.

Keyboard: A music keyboard is a good invention because you don’t have to buy a huge, expensive, hard to move piano in order to enjoy playing music.

Fan: A fan is a useful invention because it helps to cool you off on the really hot days.

Television: A TV is a great invention because it gives your mind something to relax and focus on when you’re having a rough day.

Duck Tape: You can fix anything.

Coffee Brewer: Easy to use, and makes delicious coffee without having to boil the water first.

Stove/Oven: Allows humans to create delicious, home cooked meals.

10 Things I Couldn't Live Without

Electrical Outlet: Allows me to use electronic devices, which is a necessity in today’s world.

Sink: Easy access to treated water.

Toothbrush: Need it in order to maintain excellent hygiene.

Toilet: If you need to use the restroom, it’s very convenient.

Matches: You need fire to be able to heat your house or cook your food.

Water: The human body is about sixty percent water; you need it in order to live.

Clothes: In today’s world, if you go outside naked it’s called public indecency; and you get in trouble.

Clock: A clock is a necessity, because you need to know what time it is.

Lights: If you didn’t have lights, you would have to light a candle or lantern every time you wanted to see in the dark. With a light, you can just flip a switch.

Car: In order to go places, you need transportation. In Lander, Wyoming, there is no such thing as a public transit system.

Journal # 8

One of my favorite cartoons, South Park, is created by paper cut outs and some computer imaging. The creators of the show, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are able to display emotion in a very simplistic way. The five characters I used to show the different emotions are (from left to right) Kenny, Stan, Butters, Kyle, and Eric.

To show anger in all of the characters, the eyebrows are directed downward. Kenny is raising his fists, Stan’s mouth is open and yelling, Butters is crossing his arms and gritting his teeth, Kyle’s mouth is angled down, and Eric’s hair and eyes look as if they are about to explode.

To express sadness, Kenny is closing his eyes and hiding in his hood. Stan is closing his eyes and covering them with his hands implying that he is crying. Butters eyes are droopy and his eyebrows show sorrow. Kyle looks sad because he is lying down and his eyes positioned in a droopy, downward way, much like Butters. Eric is obviously the saddest out of the group because he is bawling his eyes out and his mouth is gaping for air.

The characters look joyous in these pictures, because of their expressions and arm positions. Kenny is throwing his arms up and looks entirely enthused. Stan is pictured as a foreign cartoon, raising his hand enthusiastically and has a huge smile. Butters is raising his arms in a similar manner and also has a big smile. Kyle is pictured as a cartoon and has a big goofy smile. Eric is pictured with his arms up and dancing with a smile on his face.

To show the character’s being uninspired, Trey Parker and Matt Stone position their facial features in a certain way. Kenny looks extremely depressed with no pants and droopy eyes. Its Stan’s birthday and he is staring at his hat like the party is extremely dull. Butters is dressed in a suit and is totally characterless. Kyle is holding a sign and staring off into space because the rally is completely bland. Eric is in jail and has a blank expression on his face.

Kenny is scared because he was cut in half and his guts are spilling out. Stan looks scared because his eyebrows are raised and his jaw is dropped. Butters looks scared because he is showing submission by kneeling. Kyle is so scared that he threw his hands up, along with his eyebrows, while his mouth is wide open screaming. Eric is so scared that he is running away.

Fire Extinguisher

I chose to keep the fire extinguisher symbol as simple as possible. However, it could have many different meanings, so it would have to be used in a context next to the actual extinguisher, or on it. I chose to use black fire to make it easy to see. Next, I used a circle and cross in bright red to show the importance of no fire, or extinguishing fire.

Custodian's Closet

I used to work as a custodian and used a mop and bucket often. This is why I decided to create a simple mop and bucket as the symbol. The colors I used have nothing to do with importance. I used them because I can remember working with my favorite red mop and bucket.

Exit

I chose to use no words in my exit sign, due to the fact that not everybody speaks the same language. I created the enclosure to be a very simple box, and made a vibrant red arrow leaving it. The vibrant red follows the same general qualities of a normal exit signs we see in America today.

Executive Washroom

For this symbol, I had to figure out the difference between hierarchies of positions. Then I compared these hierarchies to kings, queens, and peasants of the past. To show the supreme rule within the facility, I chose to use a crown which designates the executive supreme rule. On the crown I placed gems to further the righteousness of the crown.

Parking Garage

I chose to keep the parking garage sign simple. A black box and black car clearly represent a parking space. If the viewer happened to know the english language, the P would stand out even more because of the use of white space.

Men's/Women's Restroom

Instead of using people or words to segregate public restroom signs, I chose to use some of the first symbols used to describe a man and a woman. The pointed up triangle is used to represent the man's organ, whereas the pointed down triangle is used to describe a woman's.
